WINDMILL HILL

Public BBQ

Windmill Hill offers one of those quietly satisfying discoveries that make Launceston such a pleasant surprise. Perched above High Street, this elevated park delivers exactly what its name promises - a proper hill with genuine character, though any windmill has long since departed for greener pastures (or perhaps windier ones). The barbecue facilities are perfectly adequate for a family feast, with sturdy picnic tables that have clearly weathered their share of Tasmanian seasons. What strikes you most, however, is the sense of space and the rather excellent vantage point over the city below. The kids' play area keeps the younger brigade occupied while adults can actually enjoy their snags in relative peace. It's not flashy, but sometimes the best spots are the ones that simply get on with the job without making a fuss about it - very Tasmanian, really.
